Hij was van Ierse afkomst en had zich gevestigd in Brittannië. Daar was intussen de ketterij van het Pelagianisme dusdanig verspreid, dat hij voor de aanhangers ervan moest vluchten naar Gallië.
Hij stichtte er een klooster waarvan hijzelf de eerste abt was.
