Nicolaas de Mysticus

Hij was sinds 895 patriarch (= aartsbisschop) van Constantinopel, maar werd afgezet door de toenmalige keizer Leo de Wijze, omdat hij geen medewerking wilde verlenen aan diens voorgenomen vierde huwelijk. Dat was namelijk in de opvatting van de oosterse kerk. Zijn bijnaam 'de Mysticus' (= 'Geheime') ontleent hij aan het feit dat hij voorzitter was van de geheime keizerlijke adviesraad.
