Bij de bisschopsverkiezing verscheen er een duif die boven zijn hoofd heen en weer bleef cirkelen, daarmee aangevend, dat hij de aangewezen persoon was om aartsbisschop te worden.
Eenzelfde legende wordt verteld van een van zijn latere opvolgers Severus († ca 348; feest 1 februari).
Hij staat te boek als een vrome en gewetensvolle (‘waakzame’) bisschop met veel hart voor zijn mensen (‘pastor’). Zijn ambtstermijn viel in de tijd van keizer Commodus († 192). Volgens de wandschildering in de San Apollinare in Classe te Ravenna stierf hij in 184 na negen jaar zijn ambt te hebben uitgeoefend. Tegenwoordig gaat men ervan uit dat hij stierf rond het jaar 190.
