Hij werd geboren in 1528. Hij was Earl van Northumberland en werd ervan beschuldigd in Noord-Engeland een opstand te hebben willen ontketenen tegen koningin Elisabeth. Drie jaar lang heeft hij gevangen gezeten. In die tijd heeft men hem herhaaldelijk aangeboden vrij te laten in ruil voor zijn geloofsafval en toetrede tot het protestantisme. Hij weigerde standvastig wat hem tenslotte op de marteldood kwam te staan.
