Hij werd geboren in de Egyptische plaats Manouf en sloot zich als leerling-kluizenaar aan bij Sint Pachomius de Grote († 347; feest 14 mei). Na tweeëntwintig jaar in diens omgeving te hebben doorgebracht trok hij zich terug in een put, waar hij nog zeventien jaar doorbracht.
Hij geniet nog altijd grote verering bij de Kopten.
