Hij was de zoon van een dorpshoofd dat vlak aan de Schotse grens woonde. Hij begon zijn carrière als soldaat. Later kwam hij als kluizenaar naar Wales en stichtte er het klooster dat naar hem is genoemd: Llanbabon.
